A Valentine for Roger, Pete, and Stevie

VALwoman heart A Valentine for Roger, Pete, and Stevie

Do I Love You? You Better You Better You Bet!

As a Baby-Boomer, it does my heart (and vanity) good to see guys OLDER than me rockin’ like the good old days. It validates my era. Cool music when I was growing up is still cool music today. As Neil Young (another Baby-Boomer icon) said, “Hey Hey, My My, Rock-n-Roll will never die.” Neither will its legends.

Did you see The Who at the Super Bowl Half-Time Show? Pete Townsend (64) and Roger Daltrey (65) were amazing. Sure their voices aren’t as strong as in their hey-day. But their songs are timeless and they can still rock a crowd like they did back in the day.

I saw The Who in concert way back when. Roger Daltrey sang every song either running around the stage, hopping and jumping around the stage, or running in place, swinging the microphone, and belting out the songs. Do you know how hard it is to sing boisterous rock songs while performing an extreme aerobics routine? Maybe that’s why he still looks hunky today.

In 1980 Roger Daltrey starred in a British film called McVicar—where he plays a bank robber convict. It’s a lame prison movie, but who cares. You get to see Roger Daltrey’s center-of-the-earth hotness up close. Roger without a shirt, Roger in the shower, Roger in his boxers…you get the idea. Roger also sings every song on the soundtrack.

I saw this movie with my girlfriend several times. We drooled over it each time. Favorite scene for me: Roger doing pull ups in a skimpy t-shirt. No dialogue. Nothing to do with the plot. But it sure left an impression on me!

Also, let’s hear it for Stevie Nicks at the Grammy Awards! LOVE HER. Love her voice. Love her songs. Love her outfits. A post-menopausal woman rocking the place with class, style, and talent. Gotta LOVE that, too. She always looks beautiful, even with the same hairstyle for the last thirty years. Who can wear loooong straight hair with bangs and pull it off at age where the “average grandma” is wearing Easy Spirit shoes and stretch pants? La Bella Donna Nicks.

To me Stevie has barely aged. She makes me feel young. Like if I were in high school, I’d write in her yearbook:

“Stevie, You are so bitchen the way you are. Don’t ever change. Luv ya!”

One of my favorite Stevie songs with Fleetwood Mac is “Silver Springs.” It’s about her breakup with Lindsey Buckingham. Here’s part of the lyrics:

“Time casts a spell on you

But you won’t forget me

I know I could have loved you

But you would not let me

I’ll follow you down

‘Till the sound of my voice

Will haunt you

You’ll never get away from the sound

Of the woman that loves you.”

Yowza. So touching.

Here’s Stevie with Lindsey and Fleetwood Mac singing the song last year on tour. Take a listen:
