Luckily for us, there were more GOOD THINGS that happened in 2010 than bad. (Although I guess that is a matter of perception…)
Here’s what I liked:
* Repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights…” and they can serve our country as honorably as any other soldier.
* Congress passes legislation to provide health care to First Responders of 9-11. What took so long? Waiting for more to die so it wouldn’t cost as much? Sheesh.
* Rescue of the 33 Chilean Miners trapped for 69 long dark scary smelly days.

* The ragtag team of the San Francisco Giants win the World Series. YEAH!! And the best parade ever.

* Jon Stewart’s Rally to Restore Sanity. Let’s hope the lunatics are outnumbered.

* Elena Kagan confirmed as the third woman on the Supreme Court. We could use a few more.
* Admiral Thad “Taking charge and taking names” Allen makes the Gulf Oil Spill a thad bit less disastrous.
* Jerry “Frugality is a virtue” Brown kicking some rich woman’s butt in the gubernatorial election. Then throwing a public-invited inaugural party with hot dogs, chips, and water. What? No fruit punch? Gotta love it!

* Jailed Chinese dissident WRITER wins the Nobel Peace Prize.
* WikiLeaks – The truth shall set ye free. So does a transparent government.
* Craig’s List Adult Service section taken down. Better late than never.
* Michelle Obama’s fashion sense. But more important: her anti-obesity program for children.

Best book: Griftopia by Matt Taibi
Best chapter title: “The Biggest Asshole in the Universe” – referring to Alan “Ready for my close-up” Greenspan

Best sentence:
“With the $13-plus trillion we are estimated to ultimately spend on the bailouts, we could not only have bought and paid off every single subprime mortgage in the country…we could have paid off every remaining mortgage of any kind in this country—and still have had enough money left over to buy a new house for every American who does not already have one.”
Instead we gave the $$ to gamblers—who lost the bet for main street Americans—but made billions for themselves. Deserves its own Pitchfork Rally.
* Best magazine cover: The New Sheriffs of Wall Street: Elizabeth Warren (my next FW Now award winner), Mary Schapiro, and Sheila Blair, on Time, May 24, 2010 are “the women charged with cleaning up the mess.”

* Kathryn Bigelow becomes the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director. About time.

* Best acting performance in a movie: Annette Bening as Nic in The Kids Are All Right.

* Best line from a movie—written by Lisa Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg from The Kids Are All Right:”
Jules (Julianne Moore’s character) says, “Bottom line is: marriage is hard. It’s f**king hard. It’s just two people slogging through the shit… year after year… getting older… changing… it’s a f**king marathon, OK?”
* Best joke in a movie: From the documentary about Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work. In a clip of Joan appearing on The Tonight Show, she disagrees with Johnny’s comment that men appreciate a woman’s intelligence:
“I’ve never met a man who put his hands up a woman’s dress looking for a library card.”

* Best CD: Have One On Me by Joanna Newsom, a 28-year-old singer/songwriter harpist from Northern California. This CD is so rich in originality—unusual voice, melody, song structure, and lyrics—it deserves a separate blog. (Coming soon.)

* Best TV Show: GLEE!

* Best photo: The torture is over!

* Best dressed: Blake Lively (who appears to spend the majority of her life on the red carpet).

* Best dress: Badgley Mischka – a peachy-pink strapless appliqued flower and sequin frock.

* Best color dress to promote your new film: Christina Aguilera wearing FUCHSIA to a Burlesque movie function.

* Best shoes (by a mile!): Louboutin gold sparkly applique pumps custom-made for Christina Aguilera’s role in Burlesque.

How incredible are these Louboutin shoes worn in the movie?!
* Best new word: Winklevii. Named after the Winklevoss Twins, Cameron and Tyler (from the movie The Social Network.) The real Winklevii are below:

The guy in the middle is Divya Narendra, who is also a character in the movie "The Social Network." And in real life also sued FaceBook, along with the Winklevii Twins.
* Best meal all year (Frankie made me put this in): Dinner at Koberl at Blue, a restaurant and bar in the heart of downtown San Luis Obispo, CA. The website plays the tune: “Too Marvelous for Words.” That about sums it up. Frankie would add: YUM!
* Best advice for 2011: Time to get your freak on!
