Last month First Lady Michelle Obama went on holiday to a fancy-schmancy resort on the southern coast of Spain. And boy did she catch heck for it. I say GOOD FOR HER.
In the press Mrs. Obama was vilified. How dare she take a luxury vacation at tax payers’ expense when the country is in dire straits?! She was called a “modern day Marie Antoinette” and a “Material Girl.” Oh puhleez. She doesn’t strike me as having an uppity bone in her body. (She wears J. Crew for heaven sakes.)
Michelle Obama deserves a vacation. First of all, Mrs. O is a mom, a wife, and watches after her own mother—probably takes more time than a full-time job to do so. In addition, she is the First Lady of the U.S. with her own staff and a host of duties. Also probably takes up more time than a full-time job.
Consequently, Michelle Obama has TWO FULL-TIME JOBS and doesn’t get paid a nickel. She has EARNED a vacation.
And so has any woman who puts in the time and effort caring for her loved ones, holding down a job, and/or serving her country.
As all women know, you NEED a break to recharge your batteries. If you run out of energy, you are no good to others around you. You take care of yourself so you can take care of others.
Michelle Obama is a boon to America. She’s smart, classy, and works hard on events that showcase America and issues that help average Americans (like childhood obesity). Likewise, she helps POTUS keep his head on straight, gives him wise counsel (I’m sure!), and absorbs some of his stress so his hair doesn’t turn even grayer.
WE NEED HER to continue doing this.
Therefore, Mrs. Obama NEEDS to recharge her batteries. Don’t think that will happen at the Super 8 Motel in Rockville. SHE NEEDS TO GET AWAY! And as the First Lady (a vital position to the well-being of our country), these things cost money.
Michelle Obama’s vacation was for ONLY FIVE DAYS. I don’t think you can unwind in five days. Doesn’t it take at least a week to de-stress?

Besides, it wasn’t even a true vacation. She put in an appearance at the King’s palace and represented America with political goodwill. If truth be told, she probably would have rather been lying on the beach with a good book in one hand and a margarita in the other!
America is a country of heart and largess. I don’t think we really begrudge our First Lady five piddly days at a European resort.
As far as the money factor goes, don’t we Americans have MUCH LARGER problems of wasted government spending than a vacation tab? How about the Wall Street bailout for instance? How about the cost of war?
Don’t let the media, Repooplicans, and n’er-do-wells slam a short necessary vakay/rest/get-away that Mrs. Obama is entitled to for doing a good job on our behalf.
Instead, I think America should thank her for her service and wish her Bon Voyage!
