The lovely Ms. Streep and Ms. Bullock share an acting prize.
Congrats to Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock for their wins: a TIE for the Best Actress win at the Critics’ Choice Awards last night at the Hollywood Palladium. I would have voted for them, too. They’re both having great years in the male dominated youth-oriented world of Hollywood moviedom.
Tomorrow night is the Golden Globes Awards. I hope Meryl wins for Best Actress in a Comedy for Julie and Julia. Terrific movie with my favorite theme: pursuing one’s dreams no matter how daunting.
Meryl’s Julia Child was a delight to behold. So was Stanley Tucci’s performance as Child’s husband Paul. What an amazing marriage they had—their connectedness, love and support for each other, lust for each other! was palpable on the screen. Imagine it in real life. This kind of functional relationship is the kind that Hollywood usually ignores.

Paul and Julia Child (Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci) toast their wonderful life together.
The scene of Julia and Paul at the Valentine’s Day dinner and the two of them in the bathtub were romantic and touching. I also really liked the scene at the cooking school when Julia, in a chopping contest with a bunch of male students, finishes first gets this look of pride and satisfaction on her face. Bravo to Ms. Streep.
Also at the Golden Globes I hope Sandra wins for Best Actress in a Drama for Blind Side. Many reviewers said it was the best performance of her career. I didn’t see the movie. I just like her as an actress and person. She donated $1 million when the Katrina disaster wiped out New Orleans. She donated another $1 million to Doctors Without Borders to help the people of Haiti. A generous spirit. Another thing Hollywood ignores.

Va-va-va-voom Sandra Bullock at the Critics' Choice Awards, sporting a great dress and shoes.
Sandra is also a really nice person and “not all Hollywood diva-ish”—according to my brother. He was invited to her house for Thanksgiving dinner. (She lives next door to my sister in Southern California.) My Dad was invited, too. Anyone who has BOTH my bro and Dad over for the holidays with a house full of other people around is truly kind-hearted. (I wonder if the shouting bothered her?)
Good luck, Meryl and Sandra. I’ll be rooting for you!
