Sex And The City Movie #2
WOW—what’s with all the hate for the new Sex and the City movie? The critics’ reviews are scathing. So are many of the internet posts. I don’t know what buttons this movie pushed for people, but it sure has generated some nasty comments.
I don’t get it. I LIKED the movie. I even liked Liza Minnelli’s “All the Singles Ladies.” Yes, she was corny. But she fit the mood. I also really liked the (heavy criticized) karaoke scene in the Abu Dhabi nightclub. Sure it was schmaltzy, but I ‘felt the sisterhood in full force.’
I’m a BIG fan of SATC (have seen it all—more than once). I took the day off work to see the movie—on opening day, first showing.

At the movie theatre--wearing a vintage Lilly Dache satin beret and Jeffrey Campbell "Starburst" booties.
I saw the movie at the same theatre as SATC-1, which had the same audience demographic: 98% women, ages 20s through 60s. In general, the audience laughed way more than I did. I don’t think dumb puns are funny. The only negative comment I heard in the ladies room afterward was a woman said she liked it except for the part “when they made fun of the Arab people.” Valid point.
To me SATC has always been first and foremost about the friendship of the four women. I always envied their tight bond. I wish I were part of a foursome like the Carrie/Miranda/Charlotte/Samantha brigade. The friendship is alive and well in Movie #2. They’re still there for each other. Always. Best scene: Miranda and Charlotte talking about how difficult motherhood is.
Second, SATC has been about the lives the four women lead, which is a more fun/glamorous/wild life than I have. I get to be part of that New York City pizzazz through voyeurism. They’re still having fun in the Movie #2.

Carrie and Mr. Big - Best outfit ever.
Third, SATC has been about the fashion. There have been incredible clothes throughout the years. There are still great outfits in Movie #2. My fave shoes: the glittery gold ones Carrie wears with the white dress in the opening scene. My fave dress ever: Carrie’s green flowered one in the opening scene of Movie #1.
Fourth, SATC has been about issues that concern women. Is there an issue that wasn’t presented over the years? Can’t think of one. In Movie #2 there is menopause, marital malaise, motherhood dilemmas, career sacrifices, etc. There is also the juxtaposition of American women and their freedom in our society and the Muslim women’s suppression in the Arab culture.
Any movie that showcases how stupid, repressive/suppressive/oppressive, and misogynistic BURQAS are is worth the price of admission alone. Bravo to Michael Patrick King for writing the “eating French fries in a burqa” scene; the “burqa-clad women with the designer fashions underneath”; and the “burqa-bikini wearing women in the swimming pool next to the Australian men in their itty-bitty Speedos with large schlongs on display” scene.
If making fun of burqas offends the Muslim population, so be it. BURQAS OFFEND ME. They offend an entire gender of the human race and that trumps any culture’s “religious rules.”
The one scene that I did think was too much was the one with Samantha putting the moves on Mr. Hunky in the restaurant with the Arab/Muslim couple sitting at the next table watching. I wouldn’t want to witness that stuff myself if I were dining out. I also think Samantha is too smart a businesswoman to misbehave as badly as she did—i.e., offensive to the social norms of the country she was in. For me this wasn’t believable—unless her hot flashes got to her and toasted her brain cells. And believe me, I know all about those.

Total Hunk Max Ryan stars in Sex and the City Movie 2.
Lastly, SATC has been about relationships and MEN. And I am happy/thrilled/giddy to report that there is a NEW GUY in the movie who is the MOST ATTRACTIVE MAN in the entire SATC repertoire. His name is MAX RYAN, a British actor. Remember that name. He is a cross between Roger Daltrey and George Clooney. The scene where he zips through the sand dunes in a jeep: HOLY COW. There is also a nice butt shot of Mr. Ryan that is WORTH THE PRICE OF ADMISSION alone. He is hotter than my hot flashes and that is sizzlin’. Whew, I have to fan myself before I finish…
Like any movie, to me it’s about entertainment, it’s about fantasy, it’s about removing me from my humdrum life for two hours and in this case, getting to watch gal pals have a good time and learn about life. I liked this movie so much, I’m going to see it again!
AND I hope there is a SATC Movie #3 in the works. Especially if Max Ryan has a part. Oh no, gotta go get the fan again…
