How to Have a Heavenly Day – Listen to Patty Griffin

A couple weeks ago I was on an “inspirational song lyrics” kick—songs that inspire you to take on the world; songs that inspire you to laugh. Guess I’m not finished kicking…

Now I’m on to song lyrics that inspire “a peaceful easy feeling.” (Thank you, Jack Tempchin—not the Eagles. “I like the way your sparkling earrings lay, against your skin so brown. And I wanna sleep with you in the desert tonight, with a million stars all around.” Great lines; great visual. More sensual than peaceful to me!

Side note: On Jackson Browne’s Solo Acoustic Live CD, he tells a story about audience members yelling out a request for “Peaceful Easy Feeling,” thinking he had recorded it. He doesn’t mention that it is not his song, but he gives it a shot anyway. When he messes up the lyrics, the crowd starts screaming at him. Funny story.)

Now where was I? Oh yeah, lyrics that induce a feeling of inner peace and conviction. When they are tucked inside a great melody and emotional (sing it like you mean it) vocal, these songs quietly inspire.

Your confidence, your passions, your raison d’etre are ignited without running out of the house with guns blazing, heart pounding, and adrenalin spewing to take on the world (or what I call the Green Day effect).

In the morning when I wake up I pry my eyes open, inch out of bed, shuffle to the kitchen, and punch Mr. Coffee’s button. Then I punch Mr. Sony’s buttons: ON and PLAY.

Here comes Patty!

Oh Heavenly day
All the clouds blew away
Got no trouble today
With anyone

The smile on your face
I live only to see
It’s enough for me baby
It’s enough for me
Oh heavenly day

Heavenly day
Heavenly day….

How gorgeous is this song—the voice, the melody, the words, the intensity?

No one on my shoulder
Bringing me fears
Got no clouds up above me
Bringing me tears
Got nothing to tell you
I got nothing much to say
Only I’m glad to be here with you
On this heavenly heavenly heavenly heavenly heavenly day*
Oh all the troubles gone away
Oh for awhile anyway
For awhile anyway
Heavenly day
Heavenly day
Heavenly day
Heavenly day
Heavenly day
Oh heavenly day

*That’s my favorite line—the crescendo of the “heavenly” words and the exclamation of “day,” which Patty sings with five syllables. Totally love that!

Speaking of five, I usually repeat the song around five times before moving on to another. Because now I’m ready for my “regular” day!

If you say “heavenly day” enough, you cannot help but have one. Or at least start the day with the POSSIBILITY of one.

As Patty sings:

… the only thing that all that we really have to do
Is have ourselves a heavenly day…

Now go out there and have one!
